To study the effect of invasive plant called Tamarisk (salt cedar) in Upper Gila River a field survey was conducted by Remote Sensing Services Lab, Utah State University.
Our objective was to identify different plant species and classify multi-spectral aerial mosaic based on that information.
I helped to survey this area, which was approx. 70 miles long with a wide variety of vegetation (e.g. tamarisk, cottonwood, different type of grasses etc.) growing along the river floodplain.
- First multi-spectral aerial imagery was collected over the desired survey area.
- Then ortho rectified mosaic of the area was created.
- For marking native as well as invasive plant species poster size maps of the multispectral mosaic were created.
- Then we went for ground truthing at Gila River and marked a wide variety of plants on the poster.
- Created digital signatures in Erdas Imagine of the identified plants and created plant type classified map.
Note: This survey was conducted in May 2013, under the supervision of Dr. Christopher Neale (Director of Remote Sensing Services Lab, Utah State University) and another team member Osama Akasheh, PhD. (helped in survey and image classification).
